Every route reaches 5,895 metres. All require training, and every summit day is strenuous. Fitness does not prevent altitude sickness; a slower ascent and sensible acclimatisation matter for everyone.

Machame Route

A scenic southern approach through rainforest, the Shira Plateau and alpine desert. Steep sections and the Barranco Wall scramble make this a rewarding choice for confident walkers.

Difficulty
Strenuous
Recommended fitness
Strong hill-walking fitness

Be comfortable walking 5–6 hours on consecutive days, with steep climbs and a daypack.

Lemosho Route

A quieter western start, crossing the broad Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit. Eight days give more time to adjust to altitude, with a varied landscape and a Barranco Wall scramble.

Difficulty
Moderate to strenuous
Recommended fitness
Good endurance and hill-walking fitness

Build up to repeated 5–6-hour hill walks with a daypack. New trekkers should still train for long days.

Indicative summit success
80–97%Published estimates*

The longest of these itineraries offers more time to acclimatise; summit day remains demanding.

Best suited to: First-time high-altitude trekkers willing to prepare thoroughly.

Marangu Route

The classic eastern route, with hut accommodation rather than tents. You ascend and descend on the same trail; the shorter itinerary leaves less time to adapt to the altitude.

Difficulty
Strenuous at altitude
Recommended fitness
Good sustained walking fitness

Train for consecutive long walks and a very demanding summit day. Gentler trails do not make this an easy climb.

Indicative summit success
50–76%Published estimates*

Six days include an acclimatisation day, but adjustment time is still shorter than on Lemosho.

Best suited to: Walkers who prefer huts and understand the shorter ascent's altitude challenge.

Rongai Route

A quieter northern approach, often drier than the southern side, with gentler early gradients and views towards Kenya. The descent follows the Marangu trail.

Difficulty
Moderate to strenuous
Recommended fitness
Good endurance and walking fitness

Aim for 5–6-hour hill walks on consecutive days. Prepare for the steep, lengthy final summit ascent.

A seven-day itinerary provides more adjustment time than shorter versions of Rongai.

Best suited to: Trekkers seeking quieter trails and less scrambling.
